Topic: Sperm Donor

Hi

I would like to know if there is any private clinic/doctor in Perth that would approve doing DIUI using donor sperm but from an overseas sperm bank?

Also, I just wanted to say that this website is an excellent idea and I am sure it will prove very beneficial to a lot of people in perth.

Thanks

Re: Sperm Donor

Hello hopeful.aussie,

In W.A. it is not the clinics who can approve the use of overseas donated gametes but the state regulatory body - it is the Reproductive Technology Council of WA who has the final say on the importation and exportation of donated eggs/sperm/embryos. The RTC contact number for further information is 9489 2818.

You will find that there are difficulties in accepting donor sperm from overseas because in WA for a donor to be accepted the donors are required to undergo mandatory counselling with an Approved Counsellor, they have to consent to identifying information being kept about them on a mandatory state registry and the donor can't have assisted with family formation with more than 5 recipients - something that the WA clinics through centralising information can control but not something we can guarantee with overseas donors.

Thanks for the positive feedback about the website.

Regards
Iolanda

Re: Sperm Donor

Hi Iolanda,

Thanks for the information you provided.

The reason I asked the question is because I come from a minority ethnic background and therefore the chances of finding a match (donor) are very slim especially with the fertility centre I am with. Would you be able to tell me what options we have? Also, if we moved to another fertility centre in search of more donors, will we be put at the bottom of the waiting list with the new fertility centre or do you think the current fertility centre can request for possible matching sperm donors from other fertility centres in WA (if available) so that we don't have to move? I am very happy with the fertility centre I am with and my fertility specialist so an ideal outcome for us would be the latter.

Hopeful

Re: Sperm Donor

Hi hopeful.aussie,

I hope your clinic appreciates your loyalty however even though you might like to stay with your clinic, the typical process is that you would normally go to the clinic who has actually done all the hard work to develop a gamete donation programme for patients in Perth. The clinics have advertised, screened, interviewed, and counselled the donor, assessed and stored the gametes so the exchange of gametes to your current clinic is not llikely. The clinics who have done the hard work for anonymous sperm donation are

Concept Fertility Centre (Will do DI, or IVF using Donor Sperm).
Pivet Medical Centre (Will do DI or IVF using Donor Sperm)
  Keogh Institute (DI only)

As you are very supportive of your clinic I hope they can exhibit reciprocal support and on your behalf contact the clinics to see if there is donor sperm with the ethnicity that you require and find you the shortest waitling list. I would call this good patient care! If no luck then contact my rooms : 9389 7212.

Re: Sperm Donor

Hi Hopefull,
I have met a Perth person who has used donor sperm from XyteX (link removed by edited admin) importing it into Queensland using QFG and flying over there for treatment, thus avoiding the 5 family limit issue in WA. This was in 2008/2009 and the Queensland ART laws were due to be revised this year. When I last spoke to her she was planning to get her remaining embryos flown over to Perth.
She like you was from an ethnic minority - indigenous Canadian!
All the best with your research,
Claire

Re: Sperm Donor

Please Note: This site can not support overseas services which could possibly be used to contravene the  conditions of the WA HRT  (Human Reproductive Technology) ACT 1991. All readers should note the importation of embryos using donated gametes into WA must still be approved by the RTC (Reproductive Technology Council)  (08) 9489 2818.

Also from an emotional prospective patients frequently report it is very stressful doing treatment in another state when your support networks are located in Perth.

Re: Sperm Donor

I wouldn't have thought my posting with an anecdotal story was any kind of endorsement by this site.
The person I spoke of is a very contented mother of beautiful twins happy with the care QFG provided.
In fact I have heard that she was not succcessfull bringing her embryos back to WA, however had another  transferred in Brisbane and is expecting her 3rd child soon and is delighted to be on her way to completing her family.
Claire.
