Topic: BMI

I am 36 years old and my husband and I have been trying to concieve for the past 10 months.
We were refered to one of the fertility clinics for further testing. At the initial appointment the specialist requested my husband and I to do some tests(which have all turned out fine) but then said that he wouldn't see me again until I had a BMI of 35.
Due to some past and current health issues I carry some extra weight and my BMI is close to but above 35. I can understand this being an issue when the effect of the weight causes some women not to ovulate and affects their hormone levels and cycles but mine are all perfect. I carry the weight well and always have been a solid person.
I would love to weigh less but for me to loose this weight is a massive struggle and at 36 years old the time clock is ticking and I am stuck in limbo it seems as I am being denied access to a specialist in an area that I deperately need their expertise. This is causing me extreeme stress and heartache which I am sure is not helping the matter.
My question is do any IVF clinics in Perth accept and treat a patient that has a BMI over 35??

Re: BMI

Hello Danni,

It's a sensitive topic but by far the preferred option amongst doctors in fertility clinics is to have a patient with a BMI under 35 as it gives you potentially better treatment outcomes in what we know is a very expensive treatment- that being said yes,  following medical assessment to ensure you are fit for treatment, some doctors will allow you to proceed with an elevated BMI as there is no legal ruling to prevent this - treatment is determined by a doctor's individual judgement and risk assessment. Try ringing the clinics listed on this site and I think you will find the answer you are looking for - Overall however remember weight reduction will be in your best interest and perhaps you might consider seeing your GP who can link you into a specialist weight reduction programme.

Good luck,
Iolanda
